Delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) is a nonapeptide (Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu) originally isolated by Schoenenberger and Monnier from cerebral venous blood of rabbits subjected to electrical thalamic stimulation that produced slow-wave (delta) EEG sleep. A specific receptor has not been definitively cloned; reported activity spans EEG slow wave enhancement, modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, interaction with endogenous opioid systems, and antioxidant/antihypoxic effects on mitochondrial respiration in rodent brain. The peptide is broadly described in the literature as a regulatory neuropeptide rather than a classical sedative.
Epithalon (also called Epitalon or Epithalamin) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) modeled on a fragment of the bovine pineal polypeptide preparation epithalamin, developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. In cultured human somatic cells it induces telomerase activity and elongates telomeres, and in rodent models it modulates pineal melatonin rhythms and circadian gene expression. Most published mechanistic and clinical work on epithalon comes from a single research group (Khavinson and colleagues), and independent replication outside that group is limited.
